Male, of the Han ethnic group, born in 1949, a native of Suzhou, Jiangsu. A national representative bearer of the Suzhou Yuyaojinzhuan Making Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. Jin Meiquan is the fifth-generation inheritor of the Jin family's Yuyao golden brick making craft. From childhood he learned the craft from his father Jin Zhaowen, and he knows every stage by heart, from selecting the clay and forming the blanks to the firing of the golden bricks. Jin Meiquan has worked in golden brick making for more than forty years. Under his leadership, the Lumu Yuyao golden brick craft has continued to follow traditional handmade methods while growing ever more refined; the finished Yuyao golden bricks are square and plain in style, smooth and lustrous, and dark bluish-grey in color, with an average dimensional error of less than one millimeter, and they have been formally certified by the National Research Center for Ancient Architecture as an indispensable material for the restoration of historic buildings in China. Yuyao golden bricks have been laid in the Hall of Supreme Harmony of the Palace Museum in Beijing, on the Tiananmen Gate Tower, in the Summer Palace and Beihai Park, and at the four great Buddhist sacred sites.
