Mo Yanxue
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of the Miao ethnic group, born in 1951, a native of Leishan, Guizhou. A national representative bearer of the Miao Lusheng Making Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. From childhood Mo Yanxue learned the family-passed craft of making the lusheng (Miao reed-pipe wind instrument) from his family. The lusheng he makes are finely crafted, beautiful in appearance, and delightful in sound; where the traditional instrument had six pipes, his range has developed today to between fifteen and twenty-four pipes, the large lusheng reaching an overall length of six or seven meters, and they are sold both at home and abroad. Mo Yanxue has been making lusheng for forty years and has accumulated rich experience. In recent years he and his son have concentrated their main efforts on developing a new product: a twenty-four-pipe, forty-eight-tone lusheng. A fifteen-pipe lusheng with a rosewood body (shengjiao) that he made has been collected as one of the ten finest examples of folk craftsmanship by the Guizhou Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles. Under his influence, all households in the village capable of making lusheng have reaped good economic returns.
