He graduated in 1960 from the guqin department of the Preparatory Middle School of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, having studied under Liu Jingshao and Zhang Ziqian, representative figures of the Meian and Guangling schools respectively; he was subsequently admitted to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
He took up the qin again in 1975, resuming guqin performance and qin scholarship, and from October 2011 he served as director of the guqin research office of the School of Music at the Nanjing Arts Institute. He has reconstructed notation for and composed more than twenty guqin pieces and suites; his representative work, Wen Wang Cao (King Wen's Air), has had a far-reaching influence within and beyond the qin world. He has released eight guqin albums, and a large number of his works have been included in other compilations. He has published more than ten essays and three monographs. For decades he has taught the art of the qin, and over many years he has given public-benefit concerts and academic lectures in China and abroad.
Honors & Recognition
Male, Han ethnic group, born in August 1940 and died in July 2015, a native of Yixing, Jiangsu Province. He is a representative bearer of guqin art, a fourth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. His album Ru Shi Ning Jing (Thus, Serenity) won the prize for best ethnic music album in the traditional and art music category at the 18th Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan in 2007 and was shortlisted for the best performance award.
