Wang Shifa
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in August 1949 in Suide County, Shaanxi Province. From the age of twelve he studied suona playing under the folk suona artist Cao Laiqian, and at nineteen he completed his apprenticeship and established his own band. He reads numbered musical notation and understands music theory, skillfully applying theoretical knowledge to suona performance, and can play nearly one hundred traditional pieces in different keys. His suona playing is by turns intense and impassioned. At other times it is delicate and gentle, like an affectionate confession, displaying strong artistic expressiveness. Over the years he has taken part in large-scale celebratory performances held nationwide and in numerous provinces and cities, receiving widespread praise. To transmit Suimi suona, he has taken on dozens of disciples, among them Li Hongfa, Zhang Xiaohong, and Liu Pirong, who have become key members of suona bands.
