Shi Chuncai
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
In 1962 he took Yang Zaixian, known as Little Red Shoes, as his master, and a year later he began to perform the lantern dance in earnest. He blended the two markedly different artistic manners of Yang Zaixian, Little Red Shoes, and Zheng Jiuru, Little White Shoes, and formed a distinctive performing style of his own. In the dance his upper body leans forward, his shoulders shake as he advances with small backward steps, and his waist leads his hips in a natural sway as he makes his entrance with a flashing twist of the waist, always wearing the shy smile of a young girl. In his singing of the lantern songs he takes great care to draw nourishment from the various folk tunes and operatic melodies popular in the region. In 1987, together with other veteran artists, he founded a huagudeng training class and trained three cohorts totalling nearly a hundred pupils.
