Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

He began learning nuo dance performance at the age of eighteen, dancing nuo in his own village or touring elsewhere every twelfth lunar month, first lunar month and slack farming season, and he has introduced innovations on the basis of the performing skills inherited from the older generation. He chiefly takes the roles of Liu Hai, the General, the Lion Leader and the Hehe twins, and his performance is leaping, light and humorous, full of naivety and childlike simplicity. In the 1980s he assisted the local cultural departments in recovering the performing art of nuo dance and related documentation and in reviving the nuo dance troupe, and he passed on his knowledge to the younger generation without reserve, so that the local body of nuo performers has steadily grown and the content of the performances has become ever richer.
