Chen Fuyan
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in October 1933, a native of Zhuhai, Guangdong Province. In childhood the sight of his elders performing the crane dance awakened his wish to learn it, and at sixteen he formally took a master and studied the craft of the crane dance. He has made a habit of observing the habits of the white crane, such as pecking for food, preening, playing and returning to the nest, and he has classified the crane dance into step patterns, namely the slow step, the quick step, the hopping step, the leaping step, the bow step and the arrow step, and into movements such as washing the beak, pecking, preening the feathers and brushing the plumage, blending feeling into movement and expression so that the dance becomes more vivid and lifelike.
