Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1933, a native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang. National representative bearer of Zhangxiaoquanjiandao Forging Craftsmanship (Zhang Xiaoquan Scissors Forging Craftsmanship), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 1947 Shi Jinshui entered the Guo Lijin scissors workshop and became a disciple of the master of the workshop, Guo Lijin, studying the art of scissors making; three years later he went to work at the Qin Bingsheng scissors workshop. In 1954 he transferred to the Hangzhou Scissors-Making Production Cooperative, and in 1957 he entered the Hangzhou Zhang Xiaoquan Scissors Factory. Long years of hands-on production made Shi Jinshui thoroughly familiar with the seventy-two traditional steps of scissors making. After retiring, he still often returned to the factory to pass on and publicize the scissors-forging craft. As a hand-forging qianshou, the smith who holds the work beneath the hammer, he was especially skilled in forging ordinary household scissors in sizes No. 1 through No. 5, in such patterns as the round head and the long head; his products were uniform in specification and excellent in quality. In 1959 the No. 1 through No. 5 household scissors he forged were collected by the Museum of the Chinese Revolution.
