Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

National representative bearer of Zhangxiaoquanjiandao Forging Craftsmanship (Zhang Xiaoquan Scissors Forging Craftsmanship), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 1944 Xu Zuxing entered the Ding Deyou scissors workshop as an apprentice and became a disciple of Ding Deyou, studying the hand-forging of scissors. In 1947 he worked as a holder and striker at the Yang Arong scissors workshop, and from 1949 to 1952 he was a worker at the He Chunyao scissors workshop, becoming a craftsman of some note in the Hangzhou scissors trade of the time. In 1953 the government organized the establishment of five Zhang Xiaoquan scissors-making production cooperatives; Xu Zuxing was brought together with Shi Jinshui and a group of other master scissors makers, and the ancient forging methods of Zhang Xiaoquan were thereby carried on. In 1957 the Zhang Xiaoquan production cooperative was reorganized as the Hangzhou Zhang Xiaoquan Scissors Factory, and Xu Zuxing remained at the factory, serving successively as a worker and as a manager. In 1959, at the invitation of the Beijing Wang Mazi Scissors Factory, he went to Beijing to teach the scissors-forging craft. The No. 1 through No. 5 household scissors he forged were once presented as state gifts to foreign heads of state. In addition, he developed such products as military scissors and garment scissors.
