Male, of the Miao ethnic group, born in 1963, a native of Leishan, Guizhou. National representative bearer of Miao Yinshi Forging Craftsmanship (Miao Silver Ornament Forging Craftsmanship), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. The skill of forging silver ornaments practiced by Yang Guangbin was inherited from his forebears, and he is already the fifth generation of the family in the craft. At the age of thirteen Yang Guangbin began to learn the art of silver-ornament making from his father, and at fifteen he formally completed his apprenticeship and took to the road as a working artist, traveling with several of his own disciples through nearly every part of Guizhou Province and into neighboring provinces such as Guangxi and Hunan. Over his long career in silver-ornament making, Yang Guangbin modestly learned from the older generation of silversmiths and strove constantly to improve. He gained fluent command of the more than thirty steps of the traditional Miao silver-forging process: smelting, mold making, forging, wire drawing, soldering, chasing and engraving, knotting and plaiting, and washing. The silver ornaments he produces are richly varied in pattern: rooted in tradition yet full of fresh invention, with animal motifs such as butterflies and Miao dragons proving especially popular in the market and selling far afield both at home and abroad. His carving is fine and precise, and he is able to forge silver wire as fine as a hair, earning unanimous praise from experts. He has also trained a group of newcomers, playing an active role in the transmission of the Miao silver-forging craft.
