Lineage & School of Heritage

In 1948 he entered the Siwei Children’s Drama School to learn the art, receiving personal instruction in wenchou (civil clown) performance from the Peking opera clown master Xiao Changhua and from the renowned artists Gao Fuyuan, Xiao Shengxuan, Wang Chuansong and Hua Chuanhao. A member of the first graduating class of the China Theatre School, he is a third-generation transmitter of the Xiao school of art.

Male, of Manchu ethnicity, born in November 1933 in Beijing. He is an expert receiving the special government allowance of the State Council. His performance is elegant and cultured, clean and free of vulgarity, and has won the praise of audiences. The plays he excels in performing and teaching include The Gathering of Heroes (Qun Ying Hui), Examining the Head and Piercing Tang (Shen Tou Ci Tang), The Liansheng Inn (Liansheng Dian), Selecting the Commander (Xuan Yuan Rong), Snow in the Sixth Month (Liu Yue Xue), The Ruse of Changing into a Sheep (Bian Yang Ji) and The Drunken Soap-Maker (Zui Zao); he also starred in the Peking opera television film The Liansheng Inn. He has compiled and published Xiao Changhua on Xiqu, Collected Art Criticism on Xiao Changhua, On Xiao Changhua and Selected Performance Scripts of Xiao Changhua. Now in his eighties, he still persists in teaching and in research on the Peking opera performance system; his disciples and students number nearly one hundred and are scattered at home and abroad.
