Female, of Han ethnicity, born in August 1932 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. She is an expert receiving the special government allowance of the State Council. At the age of nine she entered the children’s training class of the Siwei Pingju Society in Liuzhou, Guangxi, studying qingyi and daomadan roles. In 1944 she became famous for playing the heroine Ruan Chunhua in Songs of the Fishermen of the Jiang and Han Rivers (Jiang Han Yu Ge); in 1950, on the recommendation of Tian Han, she became a disciple of Wang Yaoqing and pursued advanced study at the Xiqu Experimental School of the Xiqu Reform Bureau of the Ministry of Culture. From 1955 she was a principal actress of the experimental Peking opera troupe of the China Theatre School. In 1962 she became a disciple of Shang Xiaoyun. From 1971 she turned to teaching. Her body movement is vigorous yet graceful, her Beijing-style stage speech crisp and full of flavour, and she inherits the spirit and stylistic characteristics of the Wang and Shang schools. Her representative productions include Songs of the Fishermen of the Jiang and Han Rivers, The Golden Bowl (Jin Bo Ji), The Pearl and the Fire Banner (Zhenzhu Liehuo Qi) and Zhaojun Crossing the Frontier (Zhaojun Chu Sai).

Honors & Recognition

Representative bearer of Peking opera, a fourth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 1962 she received a gold medal at the Eighth World Festival of Youth and Students for Peace and Friendship. She has taught a great many disciples and students.
