8岁随父进团学艺，先后师从老艺人冯仙岩、周扬声，学演小生戏，后又掌握了巴陵戏失传已久的传统表演范式，如“滚肚”“吐火”“喷烟”“变脸”“耍獠牙”“翎子功”等。

国家一级演员。
戏路宽广，除本行当应工戏外，老生、三生、花脸、旦角、丑角皆能串演。
代表作有《拦江夺斗》《收姜维》《拾玉镯》等。
表演稳健大度，细腻且略带野性，演唱圆润清越。
Honors & Recognition
男，汉族，1944年9月生，2016年5月去世，湖南省平江县人。
第四批国家级非物质文化遗产项目巴陵戏代表性传承人。
1986年被授予湖南省优秀中年演员称号，1994年获湖南省戏剧芙蓉奖。
一直致力于巴陵戏后继人才的培养。
