Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Manchu ethnicity, born in 1958, a native of Beijing. National representative bearer of Juyuanhaogongjian Making Craftsmanship (Juyuanhao Bow and Arrow Making Craftsmanship), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. Yang Fuxi was fond of making things by hand from childhood. When he turned thirteen, the Cultural Revolution was under way and he was unable to study the making of bows and arrows, so he instead learned carpentry from his father, laying a solid foundation for his later formal training in the making of archery equipment. The making techniques of the traditional Chinese double-curved reverse-taper composite bow transmitted by the Juyuanhao tradition have two basic characteristics of form. First, once the bowstring is strung, the grip recedes backward, the limbs curve in symmetrical arcs above and below, and the two tips of the limbs twist in opposite directions. Second, when the string is removed and the bow is flexed, the whole of the limbs bends in the reverse direction, while the grip juts forward.
