Lineage & School of Heritage

At nine she entered the Huai opera troupe of the celebrated Huaiju artist Wu Xudong to learn the craft, taught by Wu Xudong with coaching from Wu Yunfeng, and she specialised in huadan (lively young female) and guimendan (refined young lady) roles.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

A National First-Class Performer. She made her formal stage debut at twelve. In 1953 she joined the Shanghai People's Huai Opera Troupe, and she went on to play the leading role in more than fifty works, both full-length and shorter pieces. She performed in the same company as Ma Lintong, Xiao Wenyan, He Jiaotian, Xiao Yunlong, Zhou Xiaofang and others. Her voice was round and sweet, her characterisation subtle and vivid, and her acting gentle and disciplined, imbued with an Eastern feminine beauty; her portrayals of huadan and guimendan roles were wholly distinctive and widely sought after. Her representative works include Lan Qiao Hui (Meeting at the Blue Bridge), Pi Shan Jiu Mu (Cleaving the Mountain to Save the Mother), Zhang Yu Zhu Hai (Zhang Yu Boils the Sea), Lü Bu Xi Diaochan (Lü Bu Flirts with Diaochan), San Nü Qiang Ban (Three Women Fight for the Board), Wang Gui yu Li Xiangxiang (Wang Gui and Li Xiangxiang), Xiao Nüxu (The Little Son-in-Law) and Ku Cai Hua (Bitter Herb Flower).
