Female, Han ethnicity, born in September 1945, a native of Mianyang County, Hubei Province. She studied under Cheng Lanting (stage name Yiduo Yun, "A Single Cloud") and also received guidance from the senior artists Sai Yunxia, Hu Hudie and Shu Xiaoyun. Her singing is round and natural, her diction clear and her timbre richly mellow; she is especially accomplished in the gaoqiang (high-pitched), qishui, siping and various xiaodiao (short tune) styles. Building on tradition and drawing on the particular qualities of her own voice, she created a distinctive singing style of her own, one recognized by connoisseurs and audiences alike. Over several decades she brought to life a great many vivid female characters. More than one hundred plays in which she took the leading role, among them the costume dramas Qin Xianglian (The Wife of Qin Xianglian), Zhu Maichen, Jigong Zhui Zong (Tracing the Mad Monk Jigong) and Zhao Wuniang, and the modern plays Xiang Laosan Zhao Xu (Xiang Laosan Takes a Son-in-Law), Hong Lu (The Red Furnace), Mai Yaowo (Selling the Cradle), Xiao Juexin (Little Resolve) and Jiang Jie, were warmly received by audiences across the Jianghan Plain and highly praised by specialists. After her retirement in 1990 she devoted herself chiefly to teaching and research, taking disciples and passing on her art, and she has served as artistic research adviser to the troupe.
