Yang Wenying
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Female, Han ethnicity, born in 1948; a native of Wujiang, Jiangsu. Yang Wenying sang mountain songs from childhood. After taking up employment, she used her spare time to continue learning and passing on the art, and after retiring she actively participated in mountain-song gatherings and exchange performances. Through long years of performance practice, she drew on the strengths of many schools and absorbed diverse influences; adapting to the conditions of her own voice, she refined and reworked the hard-turn melodic figures of the mountain-song tunes, making her singing softer and more delicate. She also has the ability to improvise. Her representative works include Xiao Tiaopi (The Little Mischief), Shange Yangyang Chang Kaichang (Mountain Songs Open the Singing), and Fenhu Bianshang Xinshiduo (Many New Things on the Banks of Fenhu Lake), among others.
