Lu Yiqin
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
She was the adopted daughter and a formal indoor disciple of the Jingyun Dagu performing artist Luo Yusheng. In 1950 she became a disciple of Mr. Cheng Shutang, studying stage movement and posture. In 1951 she joined the Tianjin Municipal Quyi Work Troupe. In 1952 she was admitted to the Central Song and Dance Ensemble. In 1955 she was transferred back to the Tianjin Quyi Troupe. During this period she received professional vocal training and mastered scientific vocal technique. She concentrated on developing the lyrical side in which the Luo school excels, advancing it toward greater delicacy, mellifluousness and tenderness; she also gave full play to the Luo school’s hallmark of conveying emotion through the voice and combining strength with gentleness, with a high, firm and resonant vocal line in which sound and feeling merge. Her live performances were exquisite: she held that once she moved, the movement must carry drama, pursuing the expressive, impressionistic realm of art and leaving audiences ample room for imagination.
