Song Xiping
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A woman of Han ethnicity, she was born in 1951 in Chengdu, Sichuan. A national representative bearer of Chengdu Qiyi (Chengdu lacquer art), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a master of arts and crafts of Sichuan Province. In 1972, in the lacquerware workshop of the Chengdu Research Institute of Arts and Crafts, Song Xiping took the master craftsman Chen Chunhe as her teacher, studying the decorative carved-flower techniques of Chengdu lacquerware together with the making of lacquer bodies, the application of lacquer and polishing; she mastered the complete repertoire of lacquer work in the production of lacquerware. Afterwards, she studied successively under Professor Qiao Shiguang of the lacquer art specialty at the Central Academy of Arts and Design, Professor Li Dashu of the lacquer art specialty at the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, and the lacquer artist Hu Kaixin of the Sichuan Research Institute of Arts and Crafts, concentrating on the various decorative techniques of lacquerware craft. Song Xiping excels at carved flowers with filled-in color; her foundation in the satin-gloss carving of tin sheets is solid, she wields the knife as if it were a brush, and her cutting technique is consummate. After retiring, she raised funds herself to establish a lacquer art studio, where she continues to create and also takes on apprentices. Her representative works include the carved-lacquer needle-etched lacquer painting Wenjun Ting Qin (Wenjun Listening to the Qin), the large square box with phoenix patterns in satin-gloss carved tin, and the large archaistic tiered box with carved tin and filled-in color, among others; of these, Wenjun Ting Qin was acquired by the China National Arts and Crafts Museum in 1986.
