In 1975, Yin Liping entered the Chengdu lacquer art trade, studying under Chen Chunhe.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A woman of Han ethnicity, she was born in 1953 in Chengdu, Sichuan. A national representative bearer of Chengdu Qiyi (Chengdu lacquer art), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a master of arts and crafts of Sichuan Province. In 1977, she also studied lacquer art under the master Yu Shuyun. In the 1980s, Yin Liping studied and undertook advanced training successively in the lacquer art design specialty of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts and at the Central Academy of Arts and Design, receiving the instruction and guidance of the senior figures of the lacquer world, including Shen Fuwen, Li Dashu and Qiao Shiguang; she also studied traditional Chinese painting, printmaking, watercolor, pattern design and decorative design in a systematic way. Yin Liping is especially skilled in decorative techniques, handling with ease the carved flowers with filled-in color, shadow-carved lacquer, satin-gloss carved tin with halo coloring, piled-lacquer polychrome painting, pulled-knife needle etching and variegated-coating maki-e that best represent the decorative artistry of Chengdu lacquer. In addition, she actively draws on the strengths of Japanese lacquer art, expanding the decorative expressiveness of fine polychrome painting and maki-e in Chengdu lacquer art. Her representative works include the Rotating Tiered Box with Fish Patterns and the Twelve Beauties of Jinling, among others.
Honors & Recognition
Yin Liping has passed on all of her skills to her apprentices without reserve, in the hope that the flame of Chengdu lacquer art will never die out.
