Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

She is a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts. From the age of five she learned traditional Miao embroidery, drawn floral paper-cuttings, spinning and weaving, and cloth dyeing from her mother, grandmother and maternal grandmother. She has mastered several dozen Miao costume needlework techniques, including split-thread embroidery, overcast-stitch embroidery and layered embroidery, and has incorporated her own originality into these traditional methods. Her works are exquisitely executed and distinctly artistic, rich in Miao cultural meaning and steeped in the atmosphere of village life; examples include Mother Gold and Silver, Ka Tian Pi Di (Creating the World) and Casting the Sun and Forging the Moon, whose expressive elements she distilled from ancient Miao songs, and The Snail Dragon, The Spider Dragon, Dragon and Phoenix Sing in Joy and Dragon Child, drawn from Miao folk tales. In 1993 she held a solo exhibition of her Miao folk embroidery and paper-cutting at the National Art Museum of China.
