Luo Shouquan
Lineage & School of Heritage
Luo Shouquan is the third-generation inheritor of the Luo family tradition. From the age of twelve he followed his father to the papermaking workshop to watch and learn the traditional methods of papermaking; at fifteen he helped his father with odd jobs, and at twenty he had mastered the entire papermaking craft and was able to make paper on his own. Papermaking requires seventy-two processes, and many of the fine, fragmented stages are judged solely by the experience of the master papermaker.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A man of Buyei ethnicity, he was born in 1942 in Guiyang, Guizhou. A national representative bearer of Pizhi Making Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. The Luo family has a papermaking history of more than two hundred years and is the family with the longest history and the highest prestige in papermaking in the village. The handmade paper made by Luo Shouquan carries a faint fragrance of bamboo, with even, smooth sheets and fine fibers. He still follows the ancestral rule of the traditional papermaking craft that it is passed to men but not to women; at present he has taught the craft only to his own son.
