Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A man of Han ethnicity, he was born in 1952 in Zhenfeng, Guizhou. A national representative bearer of Pizhi Making Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. The bark paper he makes is tough and resilient, with a smooth surface and uniform thickness; to the hand it feels moist and soft, soft yet firm. His products are mainly gold paper and wallpaper, and some of them are exported to Europe and America. Since 2006, Liu Shiyang has undertaken the transmission of the craft, passing the traditional papermaking techniques on in turn to his younger brothers Liu Shiyou and Liu Shihu and to his son Liu Meng, in the hope that they will carry this traditional craft forward.
