Lineage & School of Heritage

Born into a Tibetan embroidery family, she began learning the craft at the age of six from her mother, Wang Youzhen, and is the fourth-generation inheritor of Jiarong Tibetan weaving and embroidery.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Female, Tibetan, born in June 1960 in Xiaojin County, Sichuan Province. She is a national representative bearer of Tibetan weaving, cross-stitch and embroidery craft, a fourth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. Engaged in weaving and embroidery for decades, she has concentrated on collecting traditional Tibetan woven and embroidered works and related materials, has fairly systematically organised the techniques and stitches of Jiarong Tibetan weaving and embroidery, and has revived the nearly extinct gold-wrapped embroidery (panjin xiu). Her weaving and embroidery skills are superb and her ethnic character is distinct. Her representative works include Tian Di Ji Xiang (Heaven and Earth in Auspiciousness), Hua Tuan Jin Cu (Clusters of Blossoms), Budala Gong Yu Riyue Tong Hui (The Potala Palace Shining with Sun and Moon), Zhaxi Dele (Tashi Delek), Fugui Mudan (Peonies of Wealth and Honour), Shijiamouni (Shakyamuni), Huangcaishen (Yellow Jambhala) and Sibaguanyin (Four-Armed Avalokiteshvara), among others. In the relief work after the Wenchuan earthquake she actively organised veteran Tibetan and Qiang weaving and embroidery artists to rescue and compile ethnic weaving and embroidery techniques, and produced woven and embroidered works for self-reliant production. For many years she has persisted in going into villages, communities, monasteries and universities, teaching her skills to more than three thousand women, monks, students and others, helping rural women to work from home and promoting ethnic unity in the region.

Honors & Recognition

Her works have repeatedly been shown in national exhibitions and have won awards, or have been collected by foreign friends and museums.
