Huang Songjian
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A national representative bearer of Shiwan ceramic sculpture technique, a fourth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. A senior arts and crafts artist. He has been engaged in the design and making of ceramic sculpture for more than fifty years and has achieved major results, especially in the applied-sculpture (tiesu) technique. In his early years he copied late Qing Shiwan roof-ridge figurines and deliberately studied their applied-sculpture methods, successfully creating a series of applied-sculpture works such as Chuidi Xiannü (The Flute-Playing Fairy), Chun Xia Qiu Dong (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter), Chuixiao Yin Feng (Playing the Flute to Attract the Phoenix) and Mazu (The Sea Goddess), with a distinctive artistic style that founded a major school of contemporary Shiwan ceramic art, earning the appraisal of divine craftsmanship and wondrous sculpture and the reputation of an innovator of Shiwan applied-sculpture ceramic art. He has been invited to lecture and exchange in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan as well as in Singapore and the United States.
