Tuohuti Tuerdi
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Uyghur ethnicity, born in 1928, a native of Moyu, Xinjiang. He is a national representative bearer of the Uyghur Sangpizhi (mulberry-bark paper) Making Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. The making of sangpizhi paper was once a craft by which Uyghur families made their living. In 1950, Tuohuti Tuerdi began to study sangpizhi paper making under a master; eight years later he opened a papermaking workshop of his own, which closed in 1966. The sangpizhi paper he produces is yellowish, with very fine fibers and a small amount of impurities, yet it is extremely sturdy, highly resilient, soft in texture, and strong in tension; it does not break easily and is also resistant to moth damage. After the 1980s, sangpizhi paper gradually faded from the daily life of the Uyghur people, but Tuohuti Tuerdi continued to make small quantities of it each year. He is the most accomplished artisan engaged in sangpizhi production in Xinjiang today.
