Zhuang Fuquan
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1955, a native of Fuyang, Zhejiang. He is a national representative bearer of the Zhuzhi (bamboo paper) Making Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and serves as factory director and chairman of the Hangzhou Fuchunjiang Xuan Paper Co., Ltd. Zhuang Fuquan is the fifth-generation inheritor of papermaking in his family, which has passed down a complete set of mature production techniques from generation to generation. In 1972 he began working in bamboo-paper production with his father, and he has mastered and can operate the full set of bamboo-paper making techniques. Among these techniques, some are not found in other bamboo-paper producing areas, such as the human-urine fermentation method in pulp preparation and the frame-swinging, wave-riding method in paper scooping; these are consummate skills unique to Fuyang bamboo-paper production. Zhuang Fuquan excels at making Yuanshu paper (so named because it was used to write sacrificial texts at temple rites on New Year's Day). He owns fifteen production vat workshops for Yuanshu paper. The finished paper is white and flexible, retaining a faint fragrance of bamboo; it dissolves easily in water and does not allow ink to bleed through. Building on the traditional papermaking craft, he has also developed and researched products such as painting-mounting paper and handmade Xuan paper.
Honors & Recognition
The bamboo paper he produces has repeatedly won gold awards in provincial and municipal evaluations. Zhuang Fuquan now trains a group of apprentices while operating his paper mill.
