Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1950, a native of Shanlian, Zhejiang. He is a national representative bearer of the Hubi Brush Making Craftsmanship, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and is a master of folk arts and crafts of Huzhou. In 1966, Qiu Changming began working at the Shanlian Hubi Brush Factory, where he apprenticed under the renowned senior artisan Zheng Guanqing, specializing in the selection of high-grade goat-hair brushes. Brush selection and the water-basin technique are the most crucial and central parts of the entire Hubi brush manufacturing process. He fully inherited the traditional techniques of selecting goat-hair brushes and has always upheld the criteria of refinement, purity, and beauty in his work. The technical excellence of his products is evident: the brush tips are sharp and clearly pointed, the heads are even with no stray or waste hairs, and the brush bodies are glossy, white, round, and straight, so that the finished Hubi brushes possess all four virtues of sharpness, evenness, roundness, and strength. Qiu Changming actively trains young brush-selection apprentices and, by participating in various intangible cultural heritage exhibitions and demonstration events, demonstrates and promotes the Hubi brush making craftsmanship.
Honors & Recognition
In 1980, the Twin Goat brand Hubi brushes produced under his direction won first place in the first national brush-quality evaluation, organized by the Second Light Industry Bureau of the former Ministry of Light Industry, while the Changfeng Suyanghao Tiaofu (long-tipped aged goat-hair hanging-scroll brush) and the Jingpin Yulanrui (premium magnolia-bud brush) each received individual awards.
