Miaozhangqiang
Lineage & School of Heritage
He was born into a family of Jun porcelain makers and, under the influence of his father Miao Xijin, became devoted to Jun porcelain art. Using the knowledge he acquired at the Northwest Institute of Light Industry (now Shaanxi University of Science and Technology), he succeeded in explaining the formation mechanism and the making secrets of the "earthworm trail" markings in Jun glaze, and along this line located the site of the raw materials used by the ancient official Jun kilns, reproducing such precious glaze colours as sky blue, moon white and kiln-transmutation grape purple that are exactly like those of the Song official Jun kilns.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Born in August 1962 in Yuzhou, Henan Province, he is a man of the Han ethnic group. He is a national representative bearer of Jun porcelain firing craftsmanship, a fourth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He is a technician of Jun porcelain firing. His works have dignified, plain and elegant forms, and their natural kiln-transmutation glazes appear as though made by nature. Beyond glaze colour, he has broken with the traditional notion that "Jun ware never exceeds a foot", giving Jun porcelain forms a grander and more imposing presence. He actively transmits Jun porcelain firing techniques and has trained many disciples; since the 1980s he has continually instructed young Jun porcelain enthusiasts in the locality and at ceramics art colleges.
