Gongsun Xin
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of the Han ethnic group, born in October 1949 in Tonghai County, Yunnan Province. Fond of literature and the arts from childhood, he learned to sing Yunnan opera and huadeng folk opera and to play instruments from elderly artists in his village, and he wrote and performed theatrical libretti. From the age of eighteen he studied gaotai (high-platform tableau) construction under the veteran gaotai artists Yang Shaotang and Yang Lishou, and came to master the entire craft. The gaotai he builds are graceful in form and vivid in figure. He excels at weaving historical allusions and theatrical stories into them, designs the figures with great care, and is particularly exacting about scenery and props. He can also make props for folk temple fairs and is able to play wind and string instruments and to sing, which has made him widely popular among local people.
