Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of the Yugur ethnic group, born in December 1943, a native of Sunan Yugur Autonomous County, Gansu Province. Under the personal instruction of his mother, Ge Na'er, and his maternal uncle, Si Tan'er, he began at the age of seven or eight to learn the benedictory verses recited in the traditional Yugur wedding ceremony and in the ritual of a child's first haircut. After completing his training he performed these recitations at traditional Yugur weddings and children's first-haircut ceremonies in Huangcheng Town, with a brisk rhythm in the sung verses and lively, fluent wording. He is also able to sew Yugur clothing. In 2001 and again in 2005 he demonstrated the main procedures of the traditional Yugur wedding and of the children's first-haircut ceremony at arts festivals held in Kangle Township, promoting and spreading traditional Yugur culture.
