Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

A man of Han ethnicity, he was born in 1921 in Gaocheng, Hebei. Lu Zhizheng was trained in medicine within his own family from childhood, and later took Meng Zhengji and Wang Buju successively as his teachers, receiving their authentic transmission. Lu Zhizheng held in high esteem the doctrines of the spleen and stomach and of warm diseases. He inherited and carried forward the theory that the spleen and stomach are the foundation of the acquired constitution, the source of the generation and transformation of qi and blood, and the pivot of the ascent and descent of qi movement, and that human life takes stomach qi as its root. In composing prescriptions he balanced ascent and descent while attending to moistening and drying, and he developed distinctive insights into illnesses caused by pathogenic dampness. He advanced the thesis that pathogenic dampness is found not only in the south, but is also common in the north. In identifying dampness patterns he proceeded from such characteristics as a heavy, wrapped sensation in the head, lassitude of the limbs and body, a sticky feeling in the mouth, a swollen tongue with a greasy, watery-slippery coating, and a soggy, fine, or choppy pulse; in treatment he applied the three methods of freeing (tong), transforming (hua), and percolating (shen). He consistently upheld the important role of Chinese medicine in preventing and treating acute infectious diseases. In the campaign against advanced schistosomiasis, he proposed treatment schemes that brought the respective strengths of Chinese and Western medicine into play, contributing to the acceleration of the elimination of schistosomiasis. His edited volume Syndrome Patterns and Treatment of Damp Diseases in Chinese Medicine (Zhongyi Shibing Zhengzhi Xue) introduced the theory of meteorological medicine, an undertaking unprecedented in Chinese medical literature. Other works he edited include Emergencies in Internal Medicine of Chinese Medicine (Zhongyi Neike Jizheng), Treatise on the Treatment of Impediment Diseases (Bibing Lunzhi Xue), Collected Medical Fragments of Lu Zhizheng (Lu Zhizheng Yijiye), and A Practical Study of New Diseases in Chinese Medicine (Shiyong Zhongyi Xinbing Xue).
