His art of chanting and reciting baojuan was mainly transmitted within his family; from the time he finished primary school he followed his father from village to village chanting baojuan, and he is able to chant and recite more than forty kinds of baojuan.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of the Han ethnic group, born in June 1959, a native of Zhangye City, Gansu Province. He is a transmission master of Hexi baojuan (Zhangye baojuan). During the slack farming seasons he chants baojuan stories about traditional morality, myth and history and ancient life in his own home or in neighbours' homes, and he has repeatedly organized and carried out display activities of Hexi baojuan chanting at the Lantern Festival, with performances in seven administrative villages of three townships along the mountains. His collection includes twenty baojuan such as Ding Lang Xun Fu (Ding Lang Seeks His Father), Qian Long Bao Juan (The Qianlong Baojuan), Mi Feng Ji (The Tale of the Bees) and He Xian Gu Bao Juan (The Baojuan of He Xiangu), and the related objects he has collected include percussion instruments, a kang table, a bronze lamp and an incense burner. In recent years he has persisted in transmission activities, teaching the chanting and recitation of baojuan to his son Dai Jisheng.
Honors & Recognition
He is a representative bearer of Hexi baojuan (Zhangye baojuan), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 2014 he took part in the national baojuan chanting event organized in Jingjiang City, Jiangsu Province, and received an award of excellence.
