Lineage & School of Heritage
From his youth, Liu Yonghong learned the art from his mother, and through practice in social life and mutual study with other singers of the Miao ancient songs he gradually absorbed their finest essence. By the age of eighteen he had mastered a large body of folk songs, and by thirty he was fully proficient in the Miao creation epic (twelve ancient songs in all), as well as in songs of labor and daily life, courtship songs, and love narrative songs such as the Yangou Se Ge and the love songs of the Gabaifu quyi tradition.

Male, of the Miao ethnic group, born in 1936, a native of Taijiang, Guizhou. Liu Yonghong's singing is deep and resonant, suffused with an archaic flavor. His brilliant antiphonal performances at song gatherings have won high praise from the local people. Over the years, Liu Yonghong has sung in antiphonal exchange at banquets large and small and has held thousands of sessions of sung and spoken exchange in his leisure hours. Songs such as Kai Tian Pi Di (Creating the World), Da Liang Zao Zhu (Hewing Beams and Raising Pillars), Niang Jiu Ge (Song of Brewing Wine), and Feng Mu Ge (Song of the Maple Tree) have been shared and sung on many occasions at local festivals such as the Sister Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival, playing an active role in the transmission of Miao culture.
Honors & Recognition
A national representative bearer of the Miao Ancient Songs, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 2004, Liu Yonghong was awarded the title of "Master Singer of Ancient Songs" by the Guizhou Provincial Association of Folk Literature and Art, the Taijiang County Bureau of Culture, and the Taijiang County Office for the Protection of Culture.
