Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

A man of Manchu ethnicity, he was born in 1925 in Xinmin, Liaoning. In 1959 he began clinical research on the treatment of acute abdominal conditions by the integrated use of Chinese and Western medicine. In 1975 he founded the Institute of Acute Abdomen in Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, and has served as its director ever since. Wu Xianzhong inherited and carried forward traditional Chinese medical theory, establishing the principle that 'the six fu organs function by being kept unobstructed' (liufu yi tong wei yong) as fundamental in the treatment of acute abdominal conditions. He created the 'eight methods' for treating acute abdominal conditions, with the method of freeing the interior and purging downward (tongli gongxia) as the focus, and proposed the clinical research approach of 'confirming therapeutic effects, exploring regularities, reforming dosage forms, and probing mechanisms', together with the clinical research method of 'taking methods as the point of breakthrough and pursuing principles through methods'. His applied and basic research on the method of freeing the interior and purging downward in abdominal surgery has provided a feasible scheme for the modern medical prevention and treatment of intestinal failure, and has become a model in the field of integrated Chinese and Western medicine. The integrated Chinese and Western clinical surgery program he led has been a national key discipline since 1989. His representative works include Treatment of Acute Abdomen by Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine (Zhongxiyi Jiehe Zhiliao Jifuzheng), A New Study of Acute Abdomen (Xin Jifuzheng Xue), Treatment of Common Acute Abdominal Conditions in Surgery by Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, and An Interpretation of Prescriptions and Medicinals for Acute Abdomen (Jifuzheng Fangyao Quanshi).
