Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, Han, born in July 1960 in Jinzhai County, Anhui Province. Influenced from childhood by his mother Liao Chiyue, he came to love folk songs and learned to sing them. At the age of ten he learned to sing with Wang Xianqing and Ma Chaozhen, elderly folk singers of his own village. After graduating from junior middle school he sang Dabieshan folk songs in Shuanghe, Meishan and other places, and began visiting veteran artists of Dabieshan folk song; he mastered the singing of more than one hundred such songs and gradually formed a distinctive style of his own, with a broad range and a high, resonant timbre, and he is especially accomplished in the high-pitched mountain songs and short tunes of the Dabieshan. His representative piece is the high-pitched Dabieshan mountain song Man Gan Niu (Slowly Driving the Ox). Most of the songs he commands are the western-route mountain songs of Jinzhai.
