Xiong Zhenglu
Lineage & School of Heritage
Both his grandfather and his father were local masters of work chants; influenced by his family, he learned to sing mountain songs from childhood and gradually mastered the technique.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Miao, born in May 1954 in Youyang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, Chongqing. His singing style is distinctive: his voice is high and bright with great carrying power, and his bouncing tone is a particular speciality. Because he has also studied suona playing, the bouncing tone he uses in singing work chants borrows the suona's floral-tongue technique, giving his music a distinctive colour. In recent years he has been chiefly active on the various stages where Youyang folk songs are transmitted and promoted, and he has all along carried out transmission work at the Central School of Heishui Township, Youyang County.
Honors & Recognition
National representative bearer of Youyang Folk Songs, a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He won the outstanding singer award at the Competition of Champions of Ethnic Minorities held by the opera and music channels of China Central Television.
