Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A man of the Han ethnicity, he was born in 1926 in Laishui, Hebei. Through many years of clinical experience he distilled the academic doctrine that 'most diseases involve stagnation of qi, and treatment should employ the three methods of unblocking' (bing duo qizhi, fa yong santong), and founded the distinctive 'He Family's Three Methods of Unblocking' (He Shi Santong Fa), namely the mild unblocking method (weitong fa), the warming unblocking method (wentong fa), and the strong unblocking method (qiangtong fa). The core of these methods lies in selecting different needles and manipulation techniques according to different pathogenesis, so as to dredge the meridians, harmonize qi and blood, and cure disease. The Three Methods of Unblocking have been widely studied, promoted, inherited, and applied in the medical community, and have become one of the important academic doctrines in the field of acupuncture and moxibustion since 1950. The Ming and Qing volumes of the Treasure House of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (Zhenjiu Baoku: Ming Qing Juan), compiled and organized by He Puren, systematically collect, collate, and study the literature on acupuncture and moxibustion from the Ming and Qing dynasties onward. He Puren has traveled to more than a dozen countries and regions for exchanges and lecturing. His publications include Treating Pain with Acupuncture and Moxibustion (Zhenjiu Zhitong), Needles and Needling Techniques (Zhenju Zhenfa), Clinical Applications of Acupuncture Odes and Rhymes (Zhenjiu Gefu Linchuang Yingyong), Illustrated Filiform-Needle Therapy (Haozhen Liaofa Tujie), and Illustrated Fire-Needle Therapy (Huozhen Liaofa Tujie).
