Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in April 1962 in Xiping County, Henan Province. The township of Lumiao where he lives is known locally as a "bronze-vessel nest" (tongqi wozi), a hub of large bronze percussion. Immersed in it from childhood, at the age of eight or nine he followed his grandfather in learning performance techniques and took part in formal performances. By the age of fifteen he had fully mastered the performance rules of the traditional scores and served as conductor of the local Tongle Hui, that is, the player of the side drum. In 1980 he became the leading figure of the village bronze percussion society. He visited performers of large bronze percussion from different schools throughout the county, collected and organized scattered scores, compiled them into volumes, and recovered a group of lost traditional pieces such as Laomao Dao Shang Shu (The Old Cat Climbs the Tree), Zhu Bajie Ken Xigua (Zhu Bajie Eats a Watermelon) and Laolü Si Ju (The Old Donkey Neighs for Its Foal). He rehearsed them anew and restored a large body of large bronze percussion techniques steeped in rustic local flavour.
