Hu Yonghan
Lineage & School of Heritage
From childhood he studied dongxiao art under his uncle Hu Daoman, practising breath and tone production on the small flute his uncle bought him, while learning a large number of Qin opera qupai and vocal passages from Qin opera artists in his village, and acquiring such fundamentals as music reading from a music teacher.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in November 1943 in Gaoling County, Shaanxi Province. He received strict training from his uncle in circular breathing and breath control. In 1978, when his uncle died of illness and he lost his finest teacher, he felt the pressure and responsibility of inheriting and carrying forward dongxiao art. Through assiduous study he finally mastered such exclusive dongxiao techniques as double-tone substitution for singing, throat tones and upper-palate tones. In 2009 the Phonogram Archive of the Austrian Academy of Sciences permanently archived his recordings, made jointly with Hu Tianmin, of pieces including Kongzi Ku Yan Hui (Confucius Mourns Yan Hui) and Da Jinqian Tao Liusheng Ya (Large Gold Coin Suites onto Willow Shoots).
