Wu Tianping
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Bouyei ethnicity, born in April 1954 in Xingyi City, Guizhou Province. At the age of seven, under the influence of his father and the veteran artists of his village, he developed a strong interest in Bouyei instruments. He mastered the yueqin and erhu, and his leiyou playing steadily improved. He excels in the Bouyei leiyou tunes of longing (sinian diao), calling to a sweetheart (hanmei diao) and courting (langshao diao). In addition, he has mastered the making of the complete set of Bouyei bayin instruments. His instruments, with beautiful timbre and simple, dignified forms, are much sought after and have been collected by several museums in Beijing, Guiyang and elsewhere. Over the years, while steadily improving his own playing, he has attended to the transmission of his ethnic music, teaching more than twenty disciples and bringing the leiyou and Bouyei bayin into schools.
