Zhan Heping
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in October 1974, a native of Xiuning County, Anhui Province. He was born into a family of Daoist priests on Mount Qiyun and was influenced by Daoist culture from childhood. In 1992 he served as an apprentice at the Mount Qiyun Daoist Association. In the first lunar month of 1993 he formally took the elder priest Zhan Songhai, of the Xing generation, as his master and entered the Daoist order. He subsequently studied the scripture chants of the Quanzhen school at the Chinese Daoist Academy and took part in Daoist ritual activities. In 1995 he returned to Mount Qiyun, where he systematically learned from the elder priests the recitation, chanting and musical accompaniment used in the various ritual services, and has since been continuously engaged in Daoist music and ritual services. For many years he has devoted himself to collecting, uncovering and organizing ritual services and Daoist music; while learning and accumulating, he has paid attention to exchanging views with fellow Daoists so that ritual services and Daoist music may be more effectively integrated.
