Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

His Daoist name is Huo Huaixu. Male, Han ethnicity, born in September 1948, a native of Pingyuan County, Shandong Province. In 1985 he took monastic vows at the Bixia Shrine on Mount Tai in Shandong, becoming a disciple of Daoist priest Zhang Changming and the twenty-second-generation disciple of the Jinshan branch of the Quanzhen Longmen lineage. In 1987 he received the guanjin ordination at the Bixia Shrine on Mount Tai, with Daoist priest Kuang Changxiu of Mount Lao as ordination master. Out of a genuine love for the art of music, he has studied Taishan Daoist music in depth over more than twenty years of Daoist practice. The main content he sings is the Shifang Yun (Ten Directions Chants), which is common to the Quanzhen school. The instrumental pieces are for the most part adapted to the needs of lay patrons at rituals held outside the monastery and have absorbed a considerable amount of folk music. The scriptures he chants set sparse words to long melodic phrases; the melodies are delicate, archaic and elegant, deep and subtly indirect, with many filler syllables extending the phrases. The Taian Daoist orchestra of more than twenty members that he founded performs regularly for the public and is one of the more representative and influential ensembles among Daoist music groups.
