After joining Tongrentang, Lu Guangrong studied the traditional techniques for identifying rare and precious medicinal materials under Zhao Zhengang, then an expert in rare and precious medicinal materials at the Beijing Medicinal Materials Company. Through painstaking study and practice, Lu Guangrong inherited the traditional identification skills for rare and precious Chinese medicinal materials and is acclaimed within the trade as having 'fiery eyes and golden pupils,' a byword for keen discernment.

A woman of the Han ethnicity, she was born in 1937 in Tianjin. Rare and precious Chinese medicinal materials come in dozens of varieties and more than three hundred specification grades; most are scarce in supply and expensive, and modern testing techniques still find it difficult to replace traditional identification methods. The traditional identification of Chinese medicinal materials is broad in content, the causes of quality problems are complex, and it places high demands on the personal qualities, experience, and skill of inspectors, requiring strong identification ability. Lu Guangrong has taken on eight apprentices in succession, adopting the traditional master-apprentice mode; in the course of teaching them, she also instilled in her students the ways of thinking of traditional Chinese medical culture, the principles of personal conduct, pharmaceutical ethics, and scholarly character.
Honors & Recognition
A national representative bearer of Tongren Tangzhongyiyaowenhua, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project; one of the five hundred veteran experts of traditional Chinese medicine nationwide; and a recipient of the special government allowance of the State Council. In recognition of her special contributions, Lu Guangrong was named a 'National Advanced Female Worker' by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions.
