Influenced by his family, he loved the art of the single-string zither from childhood. From the age of eight he learned to play under his uncle Su Shanhui, and at eleven he studied with the masters of the single-string zither Ruan Shihe and Ruan Qining, acquiring not only superb playing technique but also the craft of making the instrument.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Jing ethnicity, born in January 1955 in Dongxing, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. In traditional pieces such as Guo Qiao Feng Chui (The Wind Blows over the Bridge), Gao Shan Liu Shui (High Mountains and Flowing Water) and Da Yu Gui Lai (Return of the Fisherman), his playing is melodious and profound in conception, attaining a state in which player and instrument become one. Drawing on his knowledge of radio technology, he fitted amplification devices to the resonating body of the instrument and thereby made a preliminary solution to the problem of its faint sound. He has always been devoted to the display and teaching of the single-string zither art; through popular instruction and the formation of performance teams, he has ensured that the Jing single-string zither art, once on the verge of being lost, has successors.

National representative bearer of the Jing Single-String Zither Art (Duxianqin), a fifth-batch national intangible cultural heritage project.
