Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A woman of the Manchu ethnicity, she was born in 1940 in Beijing. She engaged in in-depth study and research of Tongrentang's traditional pharmaceutical techniques, materia medica classics, and quality-management methods. From research into the history of nearly two centuries of supplying medicines to the Qing imperial court, she excavated and systematized the historical origins of Tongrentang's traditional Chinese medicine culture, defining that culture as 'a body of knowledge and practice with distinctive Tongrentang characteristics, comprising knowledge of disease, techniques for processing Chinese medicinals, and traditional methods of preparing Chinese medicine, formed by the organic fusion of Tongrentang's processing techniques and traditional preparation methods with the medication standards of the Qing imperial court, together with a guarantee of the supremacy of quality and integrity for medicines supplied to the imperial court.' She presided over the completion of such theoretical projects as the Collation and Study of the Le Family's Hereditary Formulas for Pills, Powders, Ointments, and Elixirs of the Tongrentang Era (Leshi Shidai Zuchuan Wansan Gaodan Xialiao Peifang Zhengli yu Yanjiu). She collected historical materials such as Tongrentang's formula books (peiben) and drug catalogues (yaomu) dating from 1669 to 1950, completed the collation of traditional formulas, verified the sources of the prescriptions and provided brief explanations for some varieties, summarized and organized the special techniques for processing Chinese medicinal materials, compiled the supplement to the Methods of Processing Chinese Medicinals (Zhongyao Paozhi Fangfa), and proposed ways of realizing the contemporary value of Tongrentang's traditional formula books and protecting Tongrentang's intangible assets, thereby making outstanding contributions to the inheritance and development of Tongrentang's traditional Chinese medicine culture.
