Xiang Hanguang
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Tujia ethnicity, born in December 1942 in Guzhang County, Hunan Province. Having heard the elders of his family sing digging songs with gongs and drums since childhood, he picked up some of the essentials of Tujia mountain song singing. After starting work, he took an active part in the protection, discovery and collation of ethnic folk cultural heritage, travelling to villages throughout Guzhang County and humbly learning from the well-known local Tujia Tima ritual specialists Tian Guangnan and Li Zongyang, so that he came to master comprehensively and systematically the lyrics, vocal styles and functions of the songs sung by the Tima in the sacrificial rites of traditional Tujia festivals. Because of his long-standing devotion to learning and accumulating Tujia folk songs and Tujia culture, he formed a distinctive ethnic style of his own in folk song singing, greatly enhancing the songs' power to move listeners, and became one of the very few representative singers in Xiangxi Prefecture able to sing in the Tujia language.
