Guan Qingwei

A man of the Han ethnicity, he was born in 1960 in Beijing. Guan Qingwei comes from a family of renowned physicians and successively studied under famous masters of Chinese medicine, including Guan Bin (courtesy name Youbo), Zhao Shisheng, Li Hongxiang, Xi Ning, Wang Tianyun, Liu Yunyuan, Jiao Shude, Hao Zilin, and Li Shucang. As an outpatient physician, he not only engaged in in-depth study and research of Chinese medical classics and materia medica, but also participated comprehensively in the collection, identification, processing, and paozhi of Chinese medicinal materials, in research on the geo-authenticity (daodi) of medicinal materials, and in pharmaceutical production and marketing. In his theoretical understanding of Chinese medicine and in clinical practice, he attaches great importance to the unity and integrity of the human body itself and to its interconnections with nature and society. In his case analyses he emphasizes the study of the causes of disease and the principles of pathogenesis; in treatment he follows the approach of seeking differences within similarities and similarities within differences, combining symptom analysis with pattern differentiation (bianzheng), while also integrating the macro and abstract perspective of Chinese medicine with the micro and concrete perspective of Western medicine. He adheres to the principles, methods, formulas, and medicinals of Chinese medicine, and in treating miscellaneous diseases of internal medicine, gynecology, pediatrics, and dermatology he has distinctive insights and outstanding therapeutic results in fields such as psychosomatic medicine, the medicine of not-yet-ill (weibing medicine), and health preservation in Chinese medicine. Guan Qingwei is currently an outstanding representative of Tongrentang's interdisciplinary medical and pharmaceutical talent. He has published numerous papers, including 'Pattern Differentiation and Treatment of Chronic Bronchitis,' 'Examples of Pattern Differentiation in the TCM Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia,' 'The Chinese Medical Treatment of Ascites Due to Cirrhosis,' and 'The Narrow View of Science Is Killing Chinese Medicine.'
