Sheng Yubin
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in September 1948 in Haiyang City, Shandong Province. From the age of nineteen he studied the Guluojiang (Tinker) role of Haiyang Big Yangge under Yan Mingyu, a yangge artist of his own village; through unremitting and painstaking study his performance matured and took on a humorous, witty style. His Tinker captures both outward form and inner spirit with striking verisimilitude, and his movements are supple and exaggerated: the weighty, steady rising-and-sinking step, the nimble and ever-changing turning-back-to-beckon-with-the-fan, and the sharply rising and falling three great strides are all performance techniques of his own devising. The movements he refined and reworked have become a model for the Tinker role in Haiyang Big Yangge.
