Yu Xin
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in August 1952 in Haiyang City, Shandong Province. At the age of eighteen he began learning the flower-drum role of Haiyang Big Yangge from his grandfather Yu Xueli, and he went on to study every technique of the role in depth. Building on his grandfather's methods he created a set of flower-drum movements distinguished by stretching, lifting and twisting: the stretch combines suppleness with strength, the lift is exactly measured, and the twist is firm yet unrestrained. This produced a style at once firm and gentle, free and well grounded, which has won unanimous approval. In 2008 he was invited to serve as artistic director of the Haiyang Big Yangge performance presented before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games; its nine-minute warm-up performance allowed audiences at home and abroad to appreciate the distinctive appeal of Haiyang Big Yangge.
